Pynchon excerpt

This is the excerpt from Gravity's Rainbow that I was talking about. I guess that Roger Mexico for me can be seen as a stand-in for contemporary thought while the Pavlovian doctor has more modernist tendencies. Note the frustration expressed by the doctor. Sorry for the bad scan, and the notes I took.

Art Fashion and Work for Hire

Art Fashion and Work for Hire

An excerpt: It talks about young artists and the internet via the conversation between older figures in the artistic sphere.

Some more from the same book:

Christina Bechtier
Was it then that you began doing art?

Hedi Slimane
I guess I never started ‘doing’ art. Art always sounds very presumptuous and awkward. It is still this dodgy terminology. From being an ‘artist’ to ‘doing art’. When does someone become an artist? Do you learn art? Are you born an artist? Showing art in a gallery does that define you as an artist? Is a bad artist still an artist? Is there any bad or good art? It’s all very confusing.

Thomas Demand
My girlfriend is an art critic. On a regular basis she sees a show and says “He is not an artist.” I think you cannot say that. Everybody who appears in that field is an artist, even if he is a bad artist. How you define that is a different story.

Peter Saville
And whose opinion? ‘Artist’ is another one of those labels now.

Hedi Slimane
A major one.

Meeting and Emails

I finally got around to making a place where people can post pdfs and stuff that interests them pertinent to the talks at my house on saturdays.
I strongly encourage anybody interested in participating to shoot me an email or give me a call so I can put you on this thing so that files can be uploaded.
Email: joanna_kay@sbcglobal.net

The talks are around 6:30pm at my house on saturday. Feel free to bring food/refreshments. I will try to provide something/be a good hostess.
